The Rinat Akhmetov Foundation summarized the results of the "One Day" essay contest, in which almost two thousand Ukrainian schoolchildren became participants. The competition was held within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation and the Institute for Modernization of Education Content of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Schoolchildren of grades 9-11 from Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions took part in it.
- "One Day" is one of the projects of the Museum of Civilian Voices of the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation. Its purpose is to preserve the testimony of eyewitnesses about the day when the war began for them. All this is done to rethink the importance of peace and for the peaceful future of the country. The museum has already collected more than five thousand testimonies of Donbas residents about war events, told from the first mouth. They tell about the difficult destinies of people whose lives were forever divided into "before" and "after" the armed conflict in the east of the country, said Iryna Blazhan, the main director of the Foundation's programs.
Commenting on the work of the jury, Svitlana Mystyuk, head of the department for work with gifted youth of the Institute for Modernization of the Education Content of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Ukraine, noted:
- These are not just works - they are human destinies, lives, stories that are passed through the heart. Probably, it was the most difficult choice in my life when evaluating works. It is impossible to single out any individual work. They are all unique. These are the pages of the recent history of Ukraine that have not yet been turned over.
- For me, as a news presenter with more than 20 years of experience, the facts were, of course, important. But first of all, I paid attention to emotionality. Many essays brought tears. Each of the authors experienced terrible moments of childhood, so it was extremely difficult to make a choice, said the ambassador of the Rinata Akhmetova Foundation and a member of the jury, the well-known host of the "Ukraine" TV channel Ihor Pupkov.
- Thank you to every participant of the competition. We are amazed by such a huge response - the Foundation received almost two thousand essays! All works are very strong, deep, and it was incredibly difficult for us to choose the winners. We cried over many essays. I came across the words of Lina Kostenko "... my childhood, killed in the war." And indeed, the essays are not children's level at all, even though they are written by schoolchildren. It is impossible to read them without emotions, without empathy. The common thing in all these works is optimism, love of life and faith in a future without war, says Olga Guk, a member of the jury and editor-in-chief of the projects of the Rinat Akhmetova Foundation.
A total of 1,842 original works were submitted to the competition. An unprecedented number of works made it to the final - 150! At the same time, the jury evaluated not only the literary talents of schoolchildren, but also the contribution of their teachers. The choice was extremely difficult, but as a result the winners were determined. They became:
