“We were terrified that the house would collapse, we wouldn’t be able to get out of the entrance,” says Danylo from Mariupol. “When the house was burning, the fire reached the bathroom. All the burning plastic fell into the basement. It hit the riser. There is shooting outside, you can’t go out. And in the basement, smoke is suffocating. DNR soldiers came down to the basement: “Stay here for another day”. When we came out, there was not a single whole house or tree. It was scary to walk around. There was a pile of garbage and shells.”
“Above you, a house is burning. In the yard, shells are exploding. And you are in the basement. And you can’t do anything!”
